Creating Heart Pillows for the Girl Scout Gold Award by Katie Ridder

I am a Girl Scout Ambassador, and a rising Senior at Conestoga High School. This year I am earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, an 80-hour service project that must have a lasting impact beyond my immediate community; it is the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn.

For this project, I sewed 60 “Heart Pillows” for Paoli Hospital. These pillows are given to recovering surgery patients to both lessen their pain and prevent being reinjured. These pillows are so important because the hospital goes through such a large number of them and has such a shortage of people who sew them.

When I began this project, my mom, who works at Once Upon a Time Creation, put me in touch with Jen to see if I could possibly receive a donation of extra fabric from her to use to create my pillows. Jen and Once Upon a Time Creation generously provided me with several boxes of fabric. Jen even provided a couple additional boxes of fabric for another group of future pillow sewers. My project could not have been successful without Jen’s help!
